Lucas Horizontal Boring Mill CNC Retrofits (30T/40T models)
We were contacted by an end user in the forging and machining industry. This user manufactures forged steel blocks and machines to their end customer’s roughing specifications. Over the years they have purchased several Lucas 30 and 40T model HBMs that had various controls on them. The goal was to find a reliable CNC control that would give them more capabilities. They decided that the NUM control was a good fit for complete and partial upgrades.
Complete Upgrades
On three of their Lucas HBMs they decided to do a complete retrofit consisting of the following components:
Completely new electrical cabinet
• Magnetics/Starters
• Power distribution
• Power supplies
• (2) Large isolation transformers for spindle and drives
• Interface relays
• CNC control
• Digital drive system- 4 axes
• Digital DC drive
• IO system
New Motors
• Absolute feedback
• High resolution
• Cable assemblies
New Operator Station
• 15” Operator display/IPC with NEMA keypad
• Machine Tool Builder Panel (MTBP)
• Industrial mouse
• UPS power supply
• Handheld MPG- pulse generator pendant
Partial Upgrades (control only)
On two of their Lucas HBMs they decided to do a partial retrofit consisting of a control only replacement. This was due to budgetary constraints and would only address the replacement of the existing control system (not drives, motors, or aged magnetics).
